A Very Good Day at CalSTRS Headquarters

Today we united for a silent demonstration at the CalSTRS headquarters in Sacramento. During the public comments section of the CalSTRS investment committee meeting, we lined the walls of the meeting room. We held red posterboard apples to represent the California schoolteachers whose pensions CalSTRS manages. Each apple has a different message to urge CalSTRS to divest from ALL fossil fuels to help end financial investments in fossil fuel industries that are speeding us towards calamity.

Divestment helped end brutal racial segregation in South Africa. CalSTRS acting to divest from South African investments was influential in turning the world against the South African economy to apply financial pressure to end devastating racial policies. If CalSTRS divests, as it is one of the largest pension funds in the world, it will influence other financial institutions WORLDWIDE to divest from fossil fuels which spell doom for our world and speed the transition to renewable energy.

Thank you to everyone who made this protest happen, and those who were with us in spirit!

Film: "Dear Governor Brown"

And video of Mark Ruffalo sharing the heartwarming tale of how fracking
was banned in New York!

And how we can take action!

While Governor Jerry Brown is an outspoken advocate for reducing emissions that contribute to climate change, he is simultaneously a big promoter of California's oil and gas industry.

The film Dear Governor Brown
asks the critical question,
can you really support both
at the same time?

"Climate Selfie" Video Project! Teachers & Students tell CalSTRS it’s time to Divest from ALL fossil fuels!

Our divestment team plans to make a video of teachers and their students' concerns about climate change to send an URGENT and compelling message to CalSTRS (California State Teachers Retirement System).

We are asking California teachers and their students to video record themselves giving a message to CalSTRS to stop investing its BILLIONS in fossil fuels and protect our students' futures. If CalSTRS, a giant pension fund in the U.S., divests completely from fossil fuels, other financial institutions across the country and across the world will do the same. If CalSTRS divests, it will accelerate the transition AWAY from fossil fuels and towards renewable energy!

With your help making and collecting videos and/or with posting these messages on social media, YOU CAN MAKE THAT HAPPEN!

Everyone knows at least one teacher and/or student. If you are a student or a teacher or a community college instructor in California, if you KNOW any teachers or students who care about our future, please visit the Fossil Free California web site for instructions:
