Behind the Scenes with Nikki Reed
Change How You Eat
Livestock and animal products accelerate climate change. Beef has a bigger impact on the environment even more than all cars and vehicles put together. See article:
Giving up beef will reduce carbon footprint more than cars, says expert - The Guardian, 7/4/14
"If everybody in the world decided to stop consuming oil and switch to solar and wind tomorrow, it's still going to take 10, 25 years.... But if everybody in that same hypothetical, enlightened world decided to switch to eating plants tomorrow, we could do it in one day." James Cameron, executive producer of "Years of Living Dangerously"
Meat production and palm oil production drive up carbon and methane emissions.
The best choice is eating more vegetables. It's not only healthier, and helps you lose weight, but consumers have already had a huge impact on many major supermarkets which now offer organics due to consumer demand and spending trends. Try one of the following. You can gradually increase your intake of vegetables - whichever level you feel comfortable with. There are many web sites with tasty, family-friendly recipes to try.
Meatless Mondays: You can start slowly! Go vegetarian one day a week. Use it to try a new vegetarian dish once a week. Eat a delicious vegetarian sandwich at lunch. Try to go easy on cheese if you can.
VB6: Vegan Before 6
"Meat as a Treat"
"Here’s the kicker: methane, the gas produced extensively by the livestock industry worldwide, traps up to 100 times more heat in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide within a 5 year period, and 72 times more within a 20 year period. The good news is that methane also leaves the atmosphere within a decade. This makes for a short-lived, but intense climate changer." -- One Green Planet
- See episode 4 of "Years of Living Dangerously" - fast-forward to the 40 minute mark - watch a 3 minute segment: again about beef.
Boycott Palm Oil - Vote with Your SmartPhone and Your Wallet!
See "Before the Flood" - fast-forward to the 46 minute mark - 4 minute segment about palm oil production.
You can download applications to your smartphone such as Buycott which help you boycott/avoid products that use palm oil, or who use egregious amounts of palm oil despite the many harms to the environment and our very future, or boycott companies who pay vast sums of money to prevent GMO labeling, make products that endanger bees, and other products or companies you don't want to support. Some of these applications can offer suggestions for alternate products that do support your values. You can VOTE WITH YOUR POCKETBOOK!!! Now organics are available at most major supermarkets. We can and we do make a difference!!!

Apply Pressure to BAAQMD to Cap Carbon Emissions in the Bay Area
Attend the Bay Area Air Quality Management District Meetings once a month to get them to move aggressively to cap carbon and methane emissions in the nine Bay Area counties.
Put the BAAQMD meetings on your calendar for the upcoming year, and attend as many as possible!
In terms of Bay Area climate action, this is considered to be low-hanging fruit. But we MUST apply pressure on BAAQMD at every meeting. They don't make it easy - meetings start at 9am on a weekday! According to 350 Bay Area:
The primary cause of global warming is the burning of fossil fuels. The Bay Area's biggest export is refined product from the five oil refineries located in Contra Costa and Solano counties. Not only are we emitting GHGs at the level of a small developed nation, we are also exporting emissions around the globe, including refinery products exported to China that would be illegal to burn in California.
State law gives California's 35 air districts, including BAAQMD, primary responsibility for control of air pollution, including greenhouse gases (GHGs) from virtually all non-vehicular sources. Plus, air districts are authorized to set stricter standards than those established by either California or the federal government. About 60% of Bay Area GHG emissions are non-vehicular.
Federal action is stalled out, or even going backwards by encouraging more drilling. BAAQMD, covering the nine county Bay Area, has the power to take action where State and federal government efforts fall short.

Take on a task, take on a role and run with it!
Web site help, social media, news media outreach, fundraising, organizing speakers/educational events, helping contact and welcome new members, volunteer with our sub-groups: all of these tasks can have a big impact in our county to help the county move as one on climate change and more.
Soil Not Oil: Carbon Sequestration into Soil
See our Soil Not Oil group's page. "Little known climate change fact: Just the first meter of soil contains as much carbon as the entire atmosphere. And there's potential to soak up much more." -- Article from Fast Co.Exist
Divest From All Fossil Fuels
See our Divestment Team page. Our goal is to get CalSTRS to divest its billions from fossil fuel companies. Where California leads, the rest of the world tends to follow. Divestment from fossil fuels is now the fastest growing divestment movement in history. It's a BIG opportunity to push the world along to removing all investments in fossil fuel companies and instead invest in 100% renewable energy. You can be part of it!
We have the technology:
That's not the problem. Our challenge is to take on the fossil fuel industry. And if that were not hard enough, news of Trump's plans get worse and worse. The fossil fuel industry is overflowing with wealth -- easily enough to buy politicians to prevent even the U.S. Army from reducing its dependence on fossil fuels and using renewable energy. And it doesn't stop there.
Are you with us? Act locally. Commit to getting your community to act as one on climate change. Divest from banks and other institutions which invest in the fossil fuel industry which is getting more and more expensive to do. Invest in and pass legislation to support wind and solar. Rip subsidies away from the fossil fuel industry. This will level the playing field for wind and solar and give our children a fighting chance at a future. With Congress endlessly bought by corporate interests -- in particular the fossil fuel industry -- endlessly deadlocked and endlessly controlled by corporate interests, we need to mobilize our cities and states to do the right thing. But we are going to have to keep corporate interests in check so they don't checkmate our ability to transition to renewable energy, and other solutions we need to survive.

How can I educate myself on climate change?
This list of resources (videos, articles, web sites) is here to give you some tools to educate yourself on the issue of climate change.
However note it's easy to get depressed and overwhelmed by the problem of global warming. So by all means, educate yourself on this issue. But don't get so caught up in all the bad news that you get paralyzed. Don't get so overwhelmed you can't get out of bed. After all, there are many reasons for hope. And so on our web site and Facebook page, we also post about hope, and opportunity. Note most environmental and climate action groups also post the good news, the wins, the solutions. So balance the bad news and the good news. Click and read the good news as well as the bad.
One thing is clear: It's going to take all our political will to make change happen. We are going to have to fight the fossil fuel industry's war on us, on our children, on our grandchildren. And the fossil fuel industry has deep enough pockets to buy nearly all our politicians, who then use government policy to block solar energy and renewable energy for years to come. That's what we have to take on - for the sake of our children and grandchildren. We are talking about children in our lifetime, and their children - not some distant great-great grandchild many generations into the future. Climate change will have a massive effect on on the lives of the children of today. Climate change will have a massive effect on their children as well. And so we ask you to get involved in climate action: For EVERYONE you LOVE! Pick a task, pick a role, and run with it! And if we do, our children have a future. And if we do, there's enormous economic benefits as well.

Global Warming's Terrifying New Math:
Three simple numbers that add up to global catastrophe - and that make clear who the real enemy is
According to Earth Island Journal, as of September 2012, this article earned "112k Facebook likes, more than 12,000 mentions on Twitter, 7,300 Stumble Upon tags, and nearly 5,000 reader comments." This article was so popular a movie was made. Read the article and/or watch the movie:
